CSP Freshman Reading Assignment: Summer 2007
First Assignment: Select six to ten quotes.
One way that an author creates a character in a novel is through the character's speech. As you read the novel, notice lines of dialogue or thoughts that help show the character's personality. If you bought a copy of the book, you should highlight or underline these lines, and put a Q in the margin to represent a quotation. If you borrowed a school copy, place a post-it note on the page or keep a list of quotations and page numbers in a notebook. You should select 6-10 quotations. As part of the test over the book, you will be asked to write about the importance of one of your selected quotations.
Second Assignment: Collage and written response
Complete the project and written response as explained below and on the back of this page. This work is due the first day of school.
Collage--16 possible points
A collage is a paper that contains an arrangement of pictures. Create a collage illustrating the plot, theme, characters, and/or setting of Touching Spirit Bear. You must include ten different images on this one paper: an image is defined as a picture, phrase, word, quote, photograph, or drawing. You may choose to include phrases or sentences from the novel; these would also count as images. You might use words and pictures cut out of old magazines and newspapers, as well as paint, markers, colored pencils, or any other art supplies. Your finished collage needs to be no smaller than 8 x 11 but no larger than 11 x 14. Lined notebook paper is not acceptable; computer paper, construction paper and poster board cut to size are acceptable options. A grading rubric has been included on the back of this page; review the requirements before you begin. Finally, be sure to include your full name on the back of the collage.
Writing--14 possible points
Include a multiple-paragraph explanation of the importance of four of the images you chose for the collage. This response must be at least one page typed. Double space your lines and use only a 12 point, plain font such as Times New Roman. Include your full name in the upper right hand corner. If you do not have access to word processing at home, computers are available at the Waukegan Public Library.
