Frankenstein  Mary Shelley

Metamorphosis  Franz Kafka

The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner Alan Sillitoe

Welcome to Advanced Placement Literature.  I'm looking forward to a year as challenging and enjoyable as this past year has been.

The primary goal of the course is to develop the close reading and analytical skills required specifically on the AP exam and generally in all college-level reading.  Annotation will help you develop these skills.

The works on your summer reading list range from the seemingly normal story about a young man in the British penal system to another young man who reanimates the dead to yet another man who awakens to find himself totally transformed.  All of the works deal with the question of identity:  what defines a person-heritage? culture? environment? goals and aspirations? the views of others?

For the first half-day of school, write one thought-provoking question for each work I have listed above. Focus on designing questions that will promote discussion of an interpretation, an opinion, or a judgment about each work.   The question can relate specifically to the novels (e.g., Why does character X___?) or to broader issues the novel raises  (e.g.,Are people really the way Shelley depicts them?)  NOTE:  You will not have class time to complete this assignment.

On the first full day of school, come prepared to write two in-class essays based on the works.  Be sure to bring the material with you.

If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me:  m5185@yahoo.com  Please use an identifiable subject label so I will know to open your letter and not reject it as spam.

Have a good summer.

Ms. Feder
