Waukegan High School Marching Band Completes Excellent Season!
The
Waukegan High School Marching Bulldogs finished a close second to Grant
High School at the Wheaton North Marching Invitational
Saturday September 22, 2007. Following a Class A championship
last
year, this years Bulldog Marching Band was outstanding in competition
performing the music of the rock band "Styx". The show
featured a trumpet solo by Scott Eikenberry in "Come Sail Away", a
percussion feature in "Renegade / Grand Illusion", and an outstanding
color
guard routine in "Best of Times / Too Much Time on my Hands". The
Waukegan High School Color Guard won the trophy for best color guard in
Class A. The Marching
Bulldogs also competed at the Waukesha South Blackshirt Marching Band
competition earning forth place in class AA. It was an excellent
season and we wish the seniors the best in the future.
Congratulations Bulldogs and
thank you seniors!
Waukegan High School Superior at IHSA
Contest
The
Waukegan High School Music Department hosted the IHSA Music
Organizational
Contest this past spring. Many area high schools attended with a
total of sixty-one performing bands, choirs
and orchestras. Waukegan High School entered six groups
into competition. The results were outstanding as the Wind
Ensemble, Jazz Band, Orchestra and Varsity Choir all earned Division 1
ratings
(superior) and Treble Choir, and Philharmonic Orchestra all earned
Division 2 ratings (excellent). The
contest was a huge success thanks to many people. Jen Wagner,
Choir Director,
organized and ran the event expertly with additional thanks to the
maintenance department and John Lundgren and Harry Peterson. The
Association of Music Parents (AMP) were
extremely supportive especially thanks to Dan Coad, president.
Additionally, the students of Waukegan High School were outstanding,
not
only in performance, but in serving as hosts and guides to the visiting
high
schools. Over 60 outstanding WHS
students volunteered their time to make this contest a success.
Directors Donald M. Glassel, Bart Medlicott,
Patrick Maag, Emily Fletcher and Jennifer Wagner were proud to see the
hard work pay off.
Jazz Benefit Concert a Swinging Success
On Thursday February 10, 2005, The
Bulldog Big Band, Rendition, The Bulldog Percussion Ensemble and the
Fernandez Octet performed a benefit concert for the WHS Marching Band.
This aim was to raise needed money to purchase new marching percussion
instruments. After ticket sales and donations, the amount raised was
nearly $8,000. Thanks to the tremendous support of the Waukegan
Association of Music Parents, led by committee chairman Dan Coad, the
event was well attended and successful. All of the money raised will
go directly to purchasing the new equipment. The large audience was
treated to a tremendous concert featuring swinging big band jazz,
stunning vocal jazz and exciting percussion ensemble features. Many
people gave generously of their time and money to make this event a
success. Big thanks go to the City of Waukegan and the Township of
Waukegan for their generous donations. Also, thanks to the
administration of Waukegan High School, especially Carl Johansen and
Kim Zupec for their undying support of the Music Department. Finally,
a big thank you to The Waukegan Association of Music Parents, Dave Kalk
and especially Dan Coad, for their time and many talents. The Bulldog
Marching Band thanks you all!

Marching Band performs in Chicago's State Street Thanksgiving Day Parade!
The
Waukegan High School Marching Band finished a great season by marching
in the State Street Thanksgiving Day Parade. This grand event was
a fitting end to one of the most successful season in WHS Marching Band
history. The parade was broadcast live on Chicago's ABC 7 and
seen by millions of viewers. Thank you to all WHS Marching Band
supporters for your help this season. We are now in the process
of fundraising for new marching drums. Please call 847-360-5651
and talk to Mr. Maag if you would like to donate money or time to make
this dream a reality.
Rendition Live on Channel 5 Chicago!
Waukegan
High School's very own Rendition, the madrigal and vocal jazz group,
under the direction of Mrs. Wagner performed live on channel 5
Chicago on the morning of Veterans Day. Channel 5 was
doing a special on Waukegan and invitied Rendition to perform
during the newscast. The group had to wake up early and trek to
Chicago, but it was quite worth the effort seeing themselves on
television. To read more about Rendition and their upcoming
Madrigal Dinner, click on the link below or visit the choir webpage.
Jazz Pianist David Benoit Performs for WHS!
David Benoit, a noted jazz pianist,
performed in the WHS auditorium this past Friday, October 22nd, to a
crowd of slightly over 600 people. He and his combo entertained
an audience comprised of individuals from our school community and
others from Lake and Cook Counties for one and a half hours.
The concert and audience response was outstanding.
Proceeds from the concert will benefit the WHS fine art
department. Also, David Benoit performed for the Music Department
and CSP students the day before. Mr. Benoit proved to be an
engaging performer and entertainer. Students were treated to
excellent piano playing and then were allowed to ask questions about
music as a career. The entire experience, put forth by the
International Foundation for the Education and Performing Arts, was
amazing. The performers were pleasant and accomodating, allowing
students to get autographs and ask questions. The Fine Arts
department at WHS would like to thank the IFEPA and David Benoit for a
tremendous experience.
