Waukegan High School Superior at IHSA
Contest
The
Waukegan High School Music Department hosted the IHSA Music Organizational
Contest this past weekend. Seventeen
area high schools attended with a total of sixty-one performing bands, choirs
and orchestras. Waukegan High School entered seven groups
into competition, the most entries in the school's history. The results were outstanding as the Wind
Ensemble, Jazz Band, Orchestra and Varsity Choir all earned Division 1 ratings
(superior) and Treble Choir, Freshman Band and Freshman Orchestra all earned
Division 2 ratings (excellent). The
contest was a huge success thanks to many people. Carl Johansen, Fine Arts Department Chair,
organized and ran the event expertly with additional thanks going to Principal
Kim Zupec, Otis Hickman, Don Pratt, John Lundgren and Harry Peterson. The Association of Music Parents (AMP) were
extremely supportive especially thanks to Dave Kalk and Larry Zupec.
Additionally, the students of Waukegan High School were outstanding, not
only in performance, but in serving as hosts and guides to the visiting high
schools. Over 60 outstanding WHS
students volunteered their time to make this contest a success. Directors Donald M. Glassel, Bart Medlicott,
Patrick Maag and Jennifer Wagner were proud to see the hard work pay off.
Jazz Benefit Concert a Swinging Success
On Thursday February 10, 2005, The
Bulldog Big Band, Rendition, The Bulldog Percussion Ensemble and the
Fernandez Octet performed a benefit concert for the WHS Marching Band.
This aim was to raise needed money to purchase new marching percussion
instruments. After ticket sales and donations, the amount raised was
nearly $8,000. Thanks to the tremendous support of the Waukegan
Association of Music Parents, led by committee chairman Dan Coad, the
event was well attended and successful. All of the money raised will
go directly to purchasing the new equipment. The large audience was
treated to a tremendous concert featuring swinging big band jazz,
stunning vocal jazz and exciting percussion ensemble features. Many
people gave generously of their time and money to make this event a
success. Big thanks go to the City of Waukegan and the Township of
Waukegan for their generous donations. Also, thanks to the
administration of Waukegan High School, especially Carl Johansen and
Kim Zupec for their undying support of the Music Department. Finally,
a big thank you to The Waukegan Association of Music Parents, Dave Kalk
and especially Dan Coad, for their time and many talents. The Bulldog
Marching Band thanks you all!

Marching Band performs in Chicago's State Street Thanksgiving Day Parade!
The
Waukegan High School Marching Band finished a great season by marching
in the State Street Thanksgiving Day Parade. This grand event was
a fitting end to one of the most successful season in WHS Marching Band
history. The parade was broadcast live on Chicago's ABC 7 and
seen by millions of viewers. Thank you to all WHS Marching Band
supporters for your help this season. We are now in the process
of fundraising for new marching drums. Please call 847-360-5651
and talk to Mr. Maag if you would like to donate money or time to make
this dream a reality.
Band Students Hit the Road for IMEA Auditions!
10 excellent WHS band students braved the
difficult etudes and Mr. Maag's driving to audition for IMEA All
District and All State Band. Auditions held at Niles North High
School provided WHS students a chance to earn their way into a very
exclusive club. Beth Zupec, Beth Anne Shorts, Molly Fletcher,
Justin Perry, Glenn Eikenberry, Dan Coad, Jon Perry, Eddie Vilchiz,
Andy Coad and Justin Williams gave it their all and represented
WHS proudly. In the end, Beth Anne Shorts will be representing
WHS at All District held at Glenbrook North High School November
13th. The real excitement came when leaving Niles North. It
was then noticed that the school van taken to auditions had a flat
tire! Justin Perry, Dan Coad and Mr. Maag changed the flat in record
time, and nothing could change the positive experience.
Bulldog Big Band Kicks Off Year!
The WHS Jazz Band, nicknamed the Bulldog
Big Band or BBB for short, started the year off with performances at
Pasta & Pops and Waukegan's Autumn Fest. The BBB was asked to
perform for this years Autumn Fest and gladly accepted. Despite
cold and windy conditions, the BBB performed well. Pasta &
Pops kicked the year off with a bang as the BBB delighting the
audience during dinner. The BBB has
performances scheduled in February and May, plus a luncheon
for the Exchange Club of Waukegan. Also, the BBB plans on
competing again this year at a local jazz invite and the IHSA
Organizational contest. To inquire about performances by the
BBB please call MR. Maag @ (847)360-5651.
