P.B.I.S.
P.B.I.S. stands for Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports. Jack Benny's P.B.I.S. program teaches and promotes the use of our 5 "Ps": Positive, Polite, Productive, Prompt, and Prepared.
An important component of P.B.I.S. is the incentives. Students receive Benny Bucks from teachers for practicing the 5 Ps. Before and after school and during Advisory, students have the opportunity to purchase many exciting items from the Benny Buck store. The students are very motivated to earn Benny Bucks and the store is a great success.
The P.B.I.S. team of teachers recently sold Valentine's Day carnations to support the Benny Buck store. They earned over $200. A special thank you to Mrs. Cynthia Fagan and Glenkirk (www.glenkirk.org) for contributing the beautiful Valentine's Day carnations. Many new rewards will be purchased based on the students' wish list. Any items or donations for the store will be greatly appreciated. If interested, please contact Ms. Pink at bpink@waukeganschools.org in Room 247.
Celebrating Success!
Recently, all Jack Benny students enjoyed an in-school P.B.I.S. celebration event, during which time students chose from among many activities. Choices included open gym, movies, educational games, open library, and computers. Below, students (and Ms. Sarlitto) celebrate P.B.I.S. success in the Library Media Center.

Jack Benny Middle School's P.B.I.S. program was recently recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education. This recognition, which can be read below, can also be found online (at http://www.pbisillinois.org, under tertiary demo sites, success stories)

Waukegan School Develops Capacity for Small Group Interventions
Progress Monitoring Pays Off
Jack Benny Middle School, Waukegan Community Unit School District 60, is improving their ability to implement Secondary interventions by monitoring progress and adjusting interventions to ensure higher rates of success.
Of 14 students placed on Check and Connect in November 2006, seven students showed progress in only three weeks. These seven students decreased their ODRs from a total of 19 in ten weeks to a total of one ODR after three weeks of the intervention.
More Intensive Intervention Avoided for a Student
A student with four ODRs was not experiencing success with Check and Connect. After individualizing the intervention by allowing her to choose her Check and Connect person, she has received only one ODR, and teachers have observed improvement in her behavior. This student's progress will continue to be monitored, but it seems that a more intensive intervention may not be needed at this time.
