Battle of the Books

Every year, students from Illinois vote for 20 books to win the Rebecca Caudill Young Reader's Book Award. The middle school library media specialists pick four of the Rebecca Caudill books for the Battle of the Books, which is a friendly team reading competition or "battle" at the school and then at the district level. For the competition this year, the students read Old Willis Place, Shakespeare's Secret, Thunder From The Sea, and Worth. Students enjoy reading the books, practicing answering questions for the battle, the school battle, a celebration following, and the final battle at the Waukegan Public Library for Benny's winning team. We hope all students will join us next year. Below is a timeline of the Battle of the Books next year. Also below is a list of next year's Rebecca Caudill books, so students can take them out from the public library and start reading over the summer!

TimeLine

December: Four Battle book titles are announced, students sign up to participate in the Battle program, and students start reading.
January or early February: students form teams then quiz each other with questions about the books.
February: A school battle occurs in the library during 8th and 9th periods. Teams of four students compete agains each other to answer questions about the four books. Treats are served to all participants.
Late February: the winning team from each school participates in a friendly district competition at the Waukegan Public Library

Congratulations to Benny's Battle Winners 2008!

Congratulations to the following four students who won first place in Benny's Battle of the books: K. Sivaramakrishna (6th grade), A. Sivaramakrishna (8th grade), R. Samson (8th grade), and O. Abushamt (8th grade)!!! These students represented Benny proudly at the district Battle of the Books at the Waukegan Public Library last February. See pictures below!
