Benny's Genre-Based Reading Incentive Program
Hang Out and Read!
PROGRAM INVITATION
The Library Media Center (LMC) invites all grades 6-8 students to participate in a reading incentive program, "Hang Out And Read." Through participation in this program, students will learn about genres, read books in a variety of genres, gain exposure to a wide array of literature, and grow in their love of reading. Between October and March, students who read and record two books in each of eight genres will receive a bookmark and a surprise, and get to participate in an Read-In party in the LMC during Library Media Month, April.
CALENDAR
Now-April 1, 2009 Begin Reading! Students are encouraged to read books independently. Books-on-tape count. Library staff displays books by genre and gives out Reading Record forms to students. Parent, guardian or teacher initials next to each book read by a student.
April 1, 2009 All participating students return their completed Reading Record form, indicating the 16 books that they've read, to Ms. Weigel during Library time.
April 2009 Students who've completed the program requirements will receive a bookmark and a special surprise, and participate in Read-in/Movie celebration during National Library Media Month.
Student Directions
- All Grades 6-8 students can participate.

All students read and record two books in each of the following eight genre: Humor, Folk/Fantasy/Science Fiction, Historical Fiction, Mystery, Nonfiction, Sports/Adventure, Biography, and Poetry on the Reading Record form (available in the LMC) by April 1, 2009. (Total =16 books.)
- A parent, guardian or teacher initials next to each book to verify that the student read the book.
- Students who read 16 books (two in each genre) get a bookmark and a special surprise and get to participate in a Read-In celebration party in the LMC in April, during National Library Media Month.
