School Admission

Dear Waukegan Parents,                                       minicougar: "minicougar"

Andrew Cooke Magnet School is a fine arts center for the environment, technology, and science.  We are dedicated to enhancing the core curriculum through the integration of fine arts and technology.  The arts program provides the opportunity for children to develop skills and understanding in drama, art, choral and instrumental music, and dance.  Students interested in the sciences will enjoy the science lab and greenhouse.  There are many opportunities to investigate and expand horizons in both the arts and academic areas.  To be considered for admission to the Cooke Magnet program, students must be performing academically at or above grade level and should have an interest in the Fine Arts. We believe the parents are an integral part of their childs education, and committment from our parents is very important.

It is not too early to begin thinking about the the application process for new students interested in attending Andrew Cooke Magnet School for the 2009-2010 school year.  We have openings for monolingual students entering grades K - 5, and Bi-Lingual students entering Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades ONLY.  Kindergarten students will be screened prior to application.  Testing will occur on January 10th, 2009 and January 24th, 2009 from 9:00 AM until approximately 12:00 PM.  You may call the school at 847-360-5463 to schedule an appointment for your child to be tested.  Please let the office know whether you are interested in the Monolingual or Bilingual program.  Parents will be notified of their child's eligibility and sent an application by February 6th, 2009.

Applications for students in grades 1 through 5 may be picked up in the office the last week of January.  Completed applications will be accepted and placed on a waiting list beginning Friday, February 6th, 2009 at 7:30 AM.   Please note, completed applications do not guarantee admission.  Students entering 1st through 5th grade must be tested prior to admission.  We will call you to schedule a testing appointment as space becomes available.  Report cards and teacher recommendations will also be evaluated.

Children with siblings currently at Cooke will be given priority in the application process.  Because of this, it is necessary for us to identify children at Cooke with siblings who are interested in applying for Cooke.  If you have a child currently enrolled at Andrew Cooke Magnet School and wish to have a sibling considered for the 2009-2010 school year, please indicate "sibling" by marking it on the application.  This is the only indicator of sibling status, so, please return the application to ENSURE PRIORITY.

There will be an informational meeting for all interested Kindergarten parents on Monday, December 8th, 2008 from 6:00 to 7:00 PM in the library at Cooke Magnet School.  If there are any questions, please call the school office at 847-360-5463.  We look forward to seeing you in December.

Sincerely,
Nan M. Heim
Principal
