Chemistry Career Day
at the Museum of Science & Industry
In 2007 we went to the 33rd Annual Chemistry Career Day on Friday, April 20th.
The cost for transportation was $11.00. First come, first served. We took only 166 students. Lunch money for McD's or Taco Bell at Gurnee Mills was needed. This was open to ALL Chemistry students at WHS!
Last year we attended the 32st Annual Chemistry Career Day on FRIDAY, April 21, 2006. The cost was $11.00 per person.
The Chemical Industry Council of Illinois (CICI) sponsor this special program at the Museum of Science & Industry. On the ride to the museum, students will have muffins and orange juice for breakfast. We arrived about 9:50 AM and after a restroom break proceeded to the auditorium where we play a competitive game against 3 other high schools. Topics are: Career Challenge & other Science, Education & Salaries, Chemistry Word Scramble, and "Where there is a will there is an 'A'".

Our student, Joe S. who represented Waukegan in this competition won FIRST place for our school. We have received 2nd place many times in the past, but this is our 3rd time at 1st.

After the first presentation, we went to a fun and fascinating presentation of Chemistry demonstrations. "Weird Science" presented by Mr. Lee Marek, a retired chemistry teacher and former mentor for this humble teacher(Glattman-Hirsch). He included some participation from the audience. Above is Jocelyn T. as a "Statue of Liberty"...soon to be holding a TORCH! He blew up hydrogen bubbles in hands. Many of our students participated as a disappearing ink victim. Mr. Marek also shared some segments of his appearances on the David Letterman show!
The students were entertained by color changes and other chemistry magic. Students laughed, and learned a few things.

The third leg, was several hands-on exhibits sponsored by several chemical companies in the Chicago area. The booths were manned by Chemists who worked well with the students and gave away numerous prizes for answering questions and doing successful experiments. It gave students a chance to rub elbows with the people in industry and ask them some questions as well as making some contacts.
2005 Pictures:
Some students donned hazardous chemical attire.

Students were all engaged by the chemical company employees who put on a great show! On the way home we stopped at Mc Donald's for lunch in Gurnee Mills. It took a while to serve, and eat 100 lunches! We returned to school a few minutes after the beginning of ninth period. It is safe to say that all the students brought something positive home from this experience.
