Predicting Products:
Demonstrations:
Water is decomposed by electrolysis to produce hydrogen and oxygen gas
-
Decomposition: Water Electrolysis Apparatus. Electricity is used to decompose owater into oxygen gas at one electrode and hydrogen gas at the other electrode. H test Reverse reaction: a burning splint added to the gas makes a popping sound. The oxygen is tested with a glowing splint that bursts into flame. CONCEPT: A decomposition reaction begins with one reactant which is a compound and ends with more than one product (usually elements) WRITE AND BALANCE THE EQUATION FOR THIS REACTION. H2O -->H2 + O2
-
Synthesis: [powdered Zn & solid I added to a dish. (A few drops of water is added as a catalyst] This bursts with a puff of purple smoke ( The excess iodine gas sublimates.) A synthesis reaction begins with 2 or more elements and produces 1 compound. Sometimes a catalyst is used.WRITE AND BALANCE THE EQUATION FOR THIS REACTION. Zn + I2 -> ZnI 2
-
Combustion:Whoosh Bottle; A small amount of methanol is added to different sized bottles, When lighted it bursts into a 'whoosh' flame. Methanol, milk bottle explosion or 10gal jug bottle: In a combustion reaction, oxygen is always one of the reactants. For complete combustion of a hydrocarbon (compound consisting of hydrogen and carbon), carbon dioxide and water are always products. WRITE AND BALANCE THE EQUATION FOR THIS REACTION. CH3OH + O2--> H20 + CO2

Whoosh Bottle
HOMEWORK: Homework worksheet 7-2 DUE TUESDAY 2/7
MONDAY 2/3
Illinois Standards: 12C, 12.11.57
4. Single Replacement: WRITE AND BALANCE THE EQUATION FOR EACH REACTION.
-
Pringle can: zinc and hydrochloric acid Zn +2 HCl -> H2 (g) + ZnCl 2
-
and H2(g) + O2 (g) -->H2O
-
CONCEPTS: Single replacement reactions begin with an element and a compound. The products will be a different element and a different compound. In a single replacement reaction, first predict if it will occur from an activity table. If an element and a compound react, the element must be more active than the element in the compound that it will replace. IN THIS CASE: Zn , K, and Na take the place of the hydrogen in the compounds because they are more reactive than hydrogen.
5. DOUBLE REPLACEMENT: 50 mL each of .1M solutions. Begin with 2 colorless and clear solutions as reactants.
WRITE AND BALANCE THE EQUATIONS FOR THESE REACTIONS.
-
LEAD NITRATE & SODIUM IODIDE yields (YELLOW PPT= lead iodide) Pb(NO3)2(aq) + NaI(aq) --> Na(NO3)(aq) + PbI2(s)
-
LEAD NITRATE & SODIUM CHLORIDE yields (WHITE PPT= lead chloride) Pb(NO3)2(aq) + NaCl(aq) --> Na(NO3)(aq) + PbI2(s)
-
LEAD NITRATE & SODIUM SULFIDE yields (BLACK PPT = lead sulfide)
-
Pb(NO3)2(aq) + NaI(aq) --> Na(NO3)(aq) + PbS(s) CONCEPTS: In a double replacement reaction, the reactants are 2 compounds in an aqueous solution. The metal ions in these reactions switch places and become 2 new compounds. Because a precipitate is formed (solid that does not dissolve in water) as a product, these reactions are not reversible. If a gas is the product, this may also be the case.

Test Demonstrations:
-
Sodium is added to water and water; It skips along and sometimes pops disappearing and changing to the pink liquid (phenolphthalein indicator) indicating a base has been produced (NaOH)..... Na(S) + H2O --> NaOH(aq) + H2
-
POTASSIUM AND WATER! Same reaction only faster and bursts into flame. KOH is produced and hydrogen gas. K(S) + H2O --> O....
-
NAIL BOTTLE ROCKET- Two nails are put in the side of 2 L plastic bottle. Methanol is added to the bottle, warmed, and corked. A Tesla Coil is used to deliver electricity. The electric current starts the combustion reaction of the methanol. The cork shoots up making a loud noise. CH3OH + O2 -->

Pink Catalyst
Homework: Lab report & Review due Thursday
Temperature & Rxn rate: Light sticks Three SnapLights are glowing at the same rate and intensity. First one is placed in hot water on a plate at about 70-80 degrees Celsius. The second is placed in room temperature water. The third is placed in ice water (~10 degrees C) The results are that the brightest one is in hot water and the dullest light is in cold water.
Concept: Increasing the temperature increases the reaction rate. The hot one will use up the reactants first. The cold one will last the longest even though it is not very bright.
-
The Pink Catalyst: Add 40 ml of 6% hydrogen peroxide to 100 mL of .2 M solution of Potassium sodium tartrate which has been heated to 70 degrees Celsius. The pink catalyst (5 ml ~ 6 g CoCl2) is then added. It "boils" quickly and then a greenish liquid is produced that returns to pink after the reactants are used up. The pink catalyst is unchanged.
Concept: Catalyst is not used up in a chemical reaction. It speeds up even a reaction that doesn't proceed quickly even after being heated.
