DRESS CODE
We hope parents will cooperate by using their good judgment as to proper attire for school. In general, students attire should be such that it does not draw overt attention to it, and/or disrupt the education process. No student will be allowed to war footwear that is designed so that unnecessary noise is made while walking, or that damages or mars the school's floors. Shirts and blouses which contain undesirable lettering or pictures will not be allowed. The final decision on proper attire rests with the principal.
- WARM WEATHER TIPS:
-
1. While shorts are permitted, side-slit shorts or biking shorts
are unacceptable. Shorts must be to knee length.
-
2. T-shirts are permitted. Fish-net shirts, tank tops and halter
tops are unacceptable.
-
3. Clothes worn to school must be worn during the school day,
including lunch periods. The exception to the rule would be gym
clothes worn during gym class.
-
4. Shirts, either designed or altered, which expose the stomach
are not permitted.
- COLD WEATHER TIPS:
-
1. Please see that your child is properly dressed for cool weather.
-

-
3. Sweat shirts and sweaters are not always adequate for cool fall
days.
-
4. IMPORTANT - All students, unless excused by your doctor's
request go outdoors for recess. We feel that children benefit by a
break of fresh air and come back to their studies refreshed and
ready to work.

BUS REGULATIONS
Many of our students live a distance from school, making bus transportation necessity. Proper behavior on the bus is required of all students, and is in the interest of safety for all passengers. The cooperation of parents is required to assure your child a safe and uneventful ride to and from school. To assist in this effort, the following rules are to be applied to all students riding the bus:
-
Students must be on time. The bus will not wait beyond the regular
schedule for those who are tardy.
- Students must obey the driver promptly and respectfully.
-
Students must never stand in the roadway to wait for the bus.
- Students must behave in an orderly fashion while on the bus.
-
Ordinary conversation with classmates is permitted. No yelling
allowed.
-
Riders may not extend arms, legs, or heads out the window of the
bus.
-
After students have taken a seat they may not move about or stand
until they depart from the bus.
-
No student shall be allowed to ride on any bus other than the one
to which he/she is assigned. Any exceptions to this rule must be
approved by the principal.
-
A student who wishes to get off a stop other than his/her own must
have a note from their parents and signed by the principal.
-
If a child is not to go home on the bus, they must present written
parent permission to the teacher in the morning. If this is being
done on a regular basis, one note for the entire year will suffice.
Without this note, the students must go home on his/her bus.

SCHOOL PARKING LOT
In the morning, cars should not park or pull into the school parking lot. This causes congestion, and our school buses cannot get through. Safety is our prime concern. Your cooperation is appreciated.
Regular school buses park on Northmoor from the school driveway to McAree. Special Education buses pull directly into the school parking lot. Children should be picked up and dropped off at the school sidewalk on Northmoor, or across the street on Flossmoor. The crossing guard will cross students from Flossmoor to the school sidewalk.

HOMEWORK
Glenwood School supports the assignment of homework to students when its purpose is to enrich and extend school experiences. To ensure that homework is a productive learning experience, the following guidelines have been established:
-
Homework assignments must be an extension of concepts presented in
class. Clear, concise instructions must be given, and it is
suggested that the assignment will be given only after the teacher
has modeled the skill and provided guided and independent practice.
-
The amount of homework given depends on the grade level, the nature
of the class, the students, and the teacher. Each grade level or
individual teacher will inform you of his/her policies. The average
amount of time that your child should spend on homework is as
follows:
| Kindergarten and 1st |
Read to your child, share his/her day |
| Primary (1st - 3rd) |
20 - 30 minutes daily |
| Intermediate (4th - 5th) |
30 - 60 minutes daily |

EDUCATIONAL FIELD TRIPS
Student trips for educational purposes are encouraged by the Board of Education as a means of supplementing and enriching the classroom experience. Written permission from the parents or guardians must be obtained before students are taken on field trips outside the school grounds. Walking field trips in the immediate vicinity of the school are authorized through a blanket notification to the parents at the beginning of the year.

CONFERENCES
Parent teacher conferences are formally conducted in November and January. They are a primary source of communication between home and school and their importance should not be underestimated as a tool for student improvement. Both parents and / or guardians should plan on attending if possible. Parents or teachers may request a conference at any other time during the school year. Regular communication between parents and teachers provide an excellent opportunity to discuss many details about your child's school experiences that cannot be conveyed on the report card. Regular communication will also help motivate your child when he/she see that both parents and teachers care about his/her progress in school.
We hope that each parent and/or guardian will be able to confer with our teachers on a regular basis during the school year. Send a note to your child's teacher or call the school office to schedule a conference other than November and January.

SCHOOL HEALTH
KEEP SICK CHILDREN AT HOME: Glenwood shares a registered nurse with two other schools; therefore, our nurse is not in the school building a majority of the time. It is important that a sick child not be sent to school for the nurse to evaluate. It is the responsibility of the parent or guardian to determine whether or not the child is too ill to go to school. This should be based on the way the child feels, as well as by the symptoms they may have. Some indications to keep your child at home include:
- If their temperature is 99 or above.
- If they complain of a persistent headache.
- If they vomit of have diarrhea.
- If they break out in a suspicious rash.
-
If they complain of a stomach ache or tiredness which may or may
not be accompanied by other symptoms.
Please do not give your child acetaminophen. (Tylenol, Datril) before sending him/her to school in the morning. Doing so may mask symptoms of a serious illness. Parents can usually tell when their child is not feeling quite like his/her usual self. If there is any questions in the parents mind about their child attending school, they are advised to allow the child to remain at home to gain extra rest the body may need. This may well serve to ward of a more lengthy illness!
If a child has temperature above 99.6 or is experiencing continued discomfort or pain, or is unable to attend to his school work, the family or emergency contact person will be notified. It is important for us to have every child's emergency information on file in the office so that we may contact parents quickly if necessary. Please update this information during the year if it changes.
