HYDE PARK HOMEWORK POLICY The Hyde Park School Community wants to
assist students in developing habits and skills of independent study and
encourage responsibility. Learning does not stop at the end of the school day
when the bell rings. Our school community is concerned with children's habit
formation, and we know positive habits are best built with consistent
reinforcement from home. Independent study is an important habit and homework
can be a strong tool for helping children to acquire the habit of study.
Ideally, parents will expect their
children to study at home for a period of time each school day, and teachers
will consistently assign homework. Thus, the habit of studying is established
by both home and school. Learning time is extended beyond the regular school
day.
MAKEUP WORK
If you would like your child's work
because of absence, please notify the office so that the teacher may have
advance notice. You may pick up the assignments in the office at the end of the
day.
MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS
New students, Kindergarten students,
and Grade 6 students MUST have a Health exam prior to enrollment. Students who got an exam last year as a fifth
grader are not required this year to get an exam for 6th grade.
Forms are available in the school office. Additionally, State law requires a
complete record of immunizations to be on file for every child. HEALTH PROCEDURES
In the case of an accident or illness,
the school personnel provide first aid and make every effort to contact the
parent. If we are unable to make contact with a parent / guardian, or in case
of serious accidents, the paramedics will be called. When a child is ill at school, we will
make efforts to contact the parent and/or emergency person listed on the family
information portion off the student profile sheet. It is imperative that you
keep this information accurate and up to date during the school year. Please
call us when you have a change.
Keep in mind that it is important for
children to be in school every day. However, home is the best place for a child
who is ill. Please keep your child at home if they
have any of the following symptoms:
- A temperature of 99 degrees or more (within 24 hours of the
current school day)
- A persistent head ache
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- A suspicious rash
VISION AND HEARING SCREENING
Waukegan District #60 provides vision
and hearing screening, at no expense, for the children. A report is made to the
parent only if a problem is detected. Further treatment is the parent's
responsibility.
HEAD LICE Children exhibiting symptoms of head
lice or nits (eggs) will be excluded from school until all nits have been
removed from the hair using a shampoo formulated to kill head lice and their
eggs. An adult must bring the child to school after treatment, and the student
should report to the nurse for re-examination before re-entry.
LUNCH RECESS POLICY
Any child who comes to school will be
sent outside for recess at noon, weather permitting, unless they provide a
doctor's note. The note must indicate the exact dates the child is to remain
indoors. No supervision is available by classroom teachers for sick children. Please make sure your child(ren) are
appropriately dressed for the weather.
REGULATIONS
FOR PRESCRIBED MEDICINE
All medicine administered at school
must be prescribed by your physician. A parent or other adult should bring the
medicine to school. Children may not carry medicine (including cough drops,
antacids, etc) to or from school. The parent must return the completed
Administration of Medication at School form, signed by the doctor and parent,
before medicine may be administered. Failure to comply with the above
regulations will result in medicine not being administered. In such cases, the
parent will be notified to come to School to administer the medicine.
TEMPORARY DISABILITY / PHYSICAL EDUCATION EXCUSE If your child is to be excused from P.E. for
more than two days because of an illness or injury, a note from your physician
is required. This note must indicate the
nature of the illness/injury and the date the student may return to P.E.
Children who are in leg casts and/or are on
crutches may not return to school without physician≠s written approval. Use of stairs requires written physician
approval. Please notify the school nurse
prior to your child's return to school. It is the
responsibility of the parent to keep the school informed regarding any changes
in their child's health that may arise during the school year.
DISCIPLINE
PROCEDURES It is the goal of Hyde Park Elementary
to provide each student with the maximum opportunity to acquire an education.
No student has the right to interfere with this opportunity by his or her
actions or inappropriate behavior. Students are expected to be courteous to
school staff, children, and others while in school, on the playground, and on
the bus. Each student is expected to respect school employees by following Hyde
Park Elementary and District #60 rules and regulations, as well as the laws of
the community, state, and nation. The student will respect and be considerate
of the personal property, rights, and privileges of others.
Consequences for acting contrary to
school and district rules and regulations will follow the guidelines specified
in board policy and state law. We would appreciate the cooperation of
all parents. Please discuss the discipline rules and policies in the District
Parent / Student Handbook with your child to prevent any misunderstanding.
Impress upon him / her the importance of good behavior.
WAUKEGAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS PARENT / STUDENT HANDBOOK In addition to receiving the Hyde Park
Parent/Student Handbook, you will also receive the WPS CUSD #60 Right,
Responsibilities, and Discipline Handbook.
It is important to familiarize yourself with the policies set forth by
the Waukegan School Board and to discuss these two documents as a family. Please return pages 50 and 51 of the district
handbook to Hyde Park with dates and
signatures where appropriate. These
documents will be kept on file at the school.
