DIVE Into Reading

Summer reading is required of all students. General education students, SPED, ELL, and Accelerated Scholars students also have projects to complete with their summer reading. GAP students will only have to complete the summer reading log listed at the bottom of this page. The DIVE brochure does not apply to GAP students. Below you will find the list of required reading for the summer. GAP reading and assignments are listed last. Summer reading assignment completion is worth 200 points towards the first quarter grade. Parents may purchase the book(s) below for $5.00 from the Jefferson office after April 15, 2009. Students will also have the opportunity to purchase from the school office. The summer reading requirements are as follows:

Summer Reading Expectations 6th and 7th Grade

Read the entire novel

Complete a writing assessment during the reading process DUE AUGUST 28

    Option 1: Write a 5 paragraph essay about your novel using the following format. Each paragraph should be a minimum of 6 sentences. 100 pts

    Paragraph 1: Summary of the novel

    Paragraph 2: Describe three things you liked about the novel

    Paragraph 3: Describe three things you would change about the novel and why

    Paragraph 4: Choose your favorite character. Describe what your character looks like, how your chahracter acts, and he or she is your favorite character

    Paragraph 5: What lesson can be learned from the novel and how you can apply this lesson to your life

    OR

    Option 2: For every three chapters, illustrate a scene or write a summary. Your scene must be neatly drawn on unlined paper. Be creative, colorful , and detailed. Provide a brief explanation as to why you chose this scene and its significance to the novel for each illustration. (100 points)

    Be prepared to discuss the novel in class upon return to school

    Be prepared to discuss a project to complete the first week of school

    Reading Expecations 8th Grade

    During reading, you must complete the following after every short story:

    Pick a favorite scene and illustrate it. Your scene must be neatly drawn on unlined paper. Be creative, colorful and detailed.

    For each illustration, provide a brief explanation as to why you chose this scene and its significance to the story.

    By the end you should have compiled a collection of 18 illustrations and explanations.

    Expectations Upon Returning to School

    Be prepared to pick a project on Friday, August 28th

    Projects due September 10th (worth a total of 100 points)
