Purpose
Tiger Steppers Drill Team represents Miguel Juarez Middle School with pride and dedication. The tiger steppers started in the 2001-2002 school year under the direction of Jimmie Luster and Alicia Bell. We were approached by several students who showed interest in starting a drill team.
We soul searched to determine what our philosophy would be. After careful consideration we decided that we wanted a club based on leadership, self-discipline and structure. We also wanted to reach kids with discipline problems and try to provide a needed structure and guidance that is often needed in middle school.
As a start, we approached 1st Sgt. Cunningham at the ninth grade center. Sgt. Cunningham is a Junior ROTC instructor with a winning team that is known all over the United States. He agreed to sponsor us and also help train our students.
The tiger steppers provides an environment for enjoyment, enrichment, and discipline. Students learn leadership skills, responsibility, as well as team skills which include techniques of working with others to realize a goal.
Our team is visible in the community and they usually compete in the annual competition each spring. We have performed at Gurnee Mills, Lake County Courthouse, and other schools and also in local parades. In the Tiger Steppers first year, they won their first trophy by placing 4th in the well known North Suburban Regional Drill Team Competition sponsored by the Angel Drill Team.
