SYNONYM

A word that means the same, or nearly the same thing. You can remember what a synonym is by thinking synonym is similar

Chilly is a synonym for Cold

Giant is a synonym for Huge

Make a list of 5 pairs of synonyms.

ANTONYM

Word pairs that are opposite in meaning

Hot--Cold,

Fast--Slow,

Black--White

Make a list of 5 pairs of antonyms.

HOMONYMS

HOMOPHONES

Words that sound alike, but that are spelled different and have different meanings.

Their- means ownership

There- means location

They're- is the contraction for "they are"

Write 2 sentences using homonyms or homophones. Make sure each version of the word is spelledand used correctly

PREFIXES

Letters or word parts added to the beginning of words. Prefixes change a word's meaning

un- means not or opposite

(unhappy, meaning not happy

re-means again

(rewrite, meaning write again)

Make a list of 5 prefixes and their meanings. Then take those 5 prefixes and put them in front of a word.

Use your new words and use them in sentences.

SUFFIX

Letters added to the end of a word that changes its meaning.

er and est used to compare 2 or more things.

(smaller, His piece of pizza is smaller than mine.

(smallest, That is the smallest piece of pizza I've ever seen.

Give 2 sentences using suffixes. Be ready to explain what the new word means.

INDENT

To set in from the margin.(margin is the part of the page outside the main body of printed or written writing

An easy way to do this is to take your index and middle finger next to the left margin. Then, start your sentence off after your two index fingers. Paragraphs are normally 5-6 sentences long.

Write a paragraph on your favorite hobby. Be sure to indent!

WRITING

Can be described as telling a story. These stories are told in first person, using the words "I", "MY" and "ME"

Write a paragraph in narrative form. This paragraph can be about anything, as long as it is about you.

EXPOSITORY WRITING

The author writes to explain or inform the audience. Most of the writing is informational. These stories contain facts and evidence about the topic.

An example is information that is written in Science books.

Write a paragraph in expository form. Be sure that all your information is FACTS.

PERSUASIVE WRITING

This writing is to construct an argument. Picking one side of the story and explaining is a must. First you need to take a stand and stick with it throughout the paper. Evidence to back up your stance will help you persuade your audience to agree with your argument

Many lawyers are good persuaders. They find evidence to back up their case.

Write one paragraph on this topic. Should we eat breakfast everyday? Be sure to take a stance and provide good reasons to back up your argument.

SIMILE

When a writer compares 2 things with the words "like" or "as"

My bedroom is as messy as a pigpen.

Write 2 things that are being compared. Don't forget to use "like" or "as".

METAPHOR

2 things that are compared without the words 'like" or "as'

This assignment was a piece of cake.

(the assignment is being compared to a piece of cake, meaning that the assignment was easy

Write a metaphor and underline the two things that are being compared. Then explain what your metaphor means. Remember that a metaphor compares 2 things WITHOUT the words "like" or "as"

ALLITERATION

The repetition of the same or very similar consonant sounds in words that are close together.

Create a sentence using alliteration. Remember to repeat consonant sounds close together.

INTEGRITY

Total honesty and sincerity or the condition of being free from damage or defect.

Although the cashier was very rude to Jim, he left the store with integrity

ISOLATION WORDS

PROCESS OF ELIMINATION

Eliminating one answer at a time to figure out the correct answer.

When answering a multiple choice question, you can narrow down your answer by the process of elimination. Read all the answers first. Then start eliminating from the most obvious wrong answer to the most correct answer.

A fact is something that can be proven. A opinion is something that can't be proven.

Miguel Juarez is the best school in Waukegan is an opinion because it can't be proven. Other teachers, students and parents may feel that their school is the best.

INFERENCE

An intelligent guess about a passage based on the clues within the text.

Jada is putting on the finishing touches to her ensemble. She wnats to make sure her outfit and make-up look just right. All of the sudden, her mother called up to her to let her know that James and the limousine were waiting. When Jada walked downstairs she saw that James was holding a corsage.

For this passage we would infer that Jada is getting ready to go to the prom.

Make an inference based on the following passage:
A father and som are looking forward to the day that is about to come. They untie their rope and leave the dock. The son has a hard time getting the fish around the hook. He looks to his father for help.

What activity would you infer the son and father are about to partake?
