Goal Statement of Lyon Magnet
Applied Learning Academy
The Lyon Magnet Applied Learning Academy's goal is Applied Learning.
Applied Learning embraces hands-on involvement application.
Research studies show that children learn more powerfully from doing,
not just hearing about ideas or learning activities.
In
reading and writing, students learn to read and write for a variety of
purposes (pleasure, comprehension, information, communication), rather
than just doing worksheets and exercises.
In
mathematics, students work with objects (sorting, counting, and
building patterns of numbers and shapes) and carry out real world
projects (collecting of data, estimating, calculating, drawing
conclusions, and making decisions).
In
science, students conduct experiments and take field trips to
investigate natural settings, pollution problems, and visit labs at
companies and hospitals.
In
social studies, students conduct opinion surveys; prepare group reports
that teach the rest of the class; and role-play famous events,
conflicts, and political debates.
