Site Navigation

The navigation menu is the small menu on the left side of your screen that allows people to quickly access stories from your site. Besides just adding links you will also need to know how to move and delete them. To edit anything in the navigation menu you need to make sure you are logged in (See Getting Started) and you need to click the edit button from the navigation menu (see picture below).

Adding links to your navigation menu

Remember, you need to create your stories before you can add them to the navigation menu. This is what my navigation menu looks like:

For this example, I am going to add a link to the “Staff” story.

  1. In the Editors Only menu, click on the Stories button.
  2. From the list of stories, select the story you want to add to your navigation menu. Right-click on the link for that story. (Control-click if you are using a Mac with a one-button mouse.)
  3. Select Copy Link or Copy Shortcut from the pop-up menu. This copies the Staff link to the clipboard so we can add it to the navigation bar. (You can also just write down the name of the story and type it in later.)
  4. Click the Edit button at the bottom of the navigation menu (see picture in the previous section).
  5. Once you're on the Edit Navigation Links page, find the Add Link section at the bottom. The left box is the Name box. This name will appear in your navigation menu. (Type Staff, no quotes.)
  6. Next to the Name box is the URL box. You can enter the URL of the link you are adding or type the name of the story (no quotes). (For our example, click inside the text box to put the cursor there and press Ctrl-V (Command-V on a Mac) to paste.)
  7. To make your links easier to read, you can delete the part that says “http://www.waukeganschools.org”. Your URL will then look like /yoursite/stories/storyReader$00 (the number at the end will be different for each story you create).
  8. Click the Update button.

Now, my navigation menu looks like this:

Moving links in your navigation menu

Once you have added a link to your navigation menu you should choose which order the links should be. Remember, you need to create your stories and links before you can move them in the navigation menu.

  1. Click the Edit button at the bottom of the navigation menu.
  2. To move links up or down in navigation menu click the up or down arrow next to the link you wish to move.

Deleting links in your navigation menu

When you delete stories you need to delete the links to those stories. In the next example I will delete the “Staff” story.

  1. Click the Edit button at the bottom of the navigation menu.
  2. Check the Delete box next to the link you would like to delete.
  3. Click the Update button.

Navigation Title Wrapping

If the title is too long for the navigation bar, Manila will automatically wrap your text. To stop this from wrapping, place “ ” between the words. (  is an HTML special character that means non-breaking space.) For example, my title is Other Pictures and Manila wraps it between Other and Pictures like this:

Other
Pictures

...so in the title I put “Other Pictures”.
