Auxiliary Services

SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST
The speech-language pathologist may enroll students who have difficulty with speech or language for corrective therapy.The following areas receive attention at Waukegan High School: articulation, voice, fluency, and expressive and receptive language. Parents or students may contact the speech-language pathologist for appropriate testing to determine if therapy is advisable. Therapy may be conducted individually or in small groups.

SOCIAL WORKER
The social worker services the entire student body by providing individual and group help with personal and social adjustments.

SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST
The school psychologist cooperates with the social workers and counselors to help students with special problems.

PUPIL PERSONNEL SERVICE TEAM
The purpose of the team is to work with students who have been referred because of problems they may be experiencing. The team is composed of an assistant principal, deans, counselors, social worker, psychologist, nurse, substance abuse coordinator, and the special education coordinator. The team meets biweekly during the school year.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNSELOR
The Lake County Health Department provides a substance abuse counselor for Waukegan High School. Students or parents may contact the counselor.

CHILD ABUSE TEAM
Waukegan High School has a child abuse team to investigate all suspected cases of child abuse. If there is evidence of child abuse, by law it must be reported to the school nurse and to the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS).

MEDICAL/DENTAL APPOINTMENTS
We encourage all parents/guardians to schedule appointments for after school hours. If your student has an appointment during the school day, please call the Health Center at UGC 360-5619 between 7:30 AM and 8:00 AM the day of the appointment. Please REMIND your student to come to the Health Center before their first class to pick up an appointment card. NOTES CANNOT BE ACCEPTED.

P.E. EXCUSES
Parents/guardians can write P.E. excuses for up to 5 days.One-day excuses go directly to the teacher. P. E. excuses for 2-5 days should be brought to the nurse before the first class of the day.

HEALTH CENTER
A registered nurse is available at all times. The Health Center is well equipped to take care of minor illnesses and injuries. Major illnesses and injuries are referred to the student's physician or to the local hospitals. All students must secure a hall pass from their teacher before going to the Health Center. Records are maintained for each student. Vision, hearing, dental, and tubercular skin test screening are conducted through the Health Center. Referrals are made to the parent/guardian. The Health Center is open during the regular school day. Illinois state law prohibits school personnel from dispensing any medication including over- the-counter preparations to any student unless prescribed by a physician.
