Student Organizations
CLASS MEETINGS Each of the four classes will hold class meetings. The advisor will arrange for the meeting through the associate principal's office.
STUDENT COUNCIL The purpose of Student Council is to provide a maximum opportunity for student participation in student affairs: to acquire a forum for the discussion of citizenship among the students and in every way support policies for the betterment of the school. The Council is divided into two boards. The Social Board plans all gym jams, dances, rec nights, talent shows and other social activities.The Political Board is involved in current situations and student complaints. All members of the student body are urged to play an active role in the Student Council.
OFFICE ASSISTANT Upon approval by the associate principal,students may opt to assist in one of the many offices at Waukegan High School in place of attending a study hall.
Requirements:
- Maintain a "C" average
- Maintain passing grades in all classes
- Maintain good attendance and behavior records
- Be at least a second semester freshman
Obtain application forms in the Guidance Office.
SCHOOL CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS There are a large number of organized clubs and groups at Waukegan
High School which offer opportunities for students to obtain experiences in working together outside the regular curriculum.
Students are encouraged to join at least one club. Any group interested in creating a school club must consult with the associate principal. The constitution must then be submitted to the administration for its approval or rejection. Upon approval, an official charter will be granted. Following is a listing of the various school clubs and organizations offered at Waukegan High School.
ACADEMIC BOWL CLUB - This club organizes an academic team in ~ order to compete scholastically against teams from other schools.
A.V.T.E.C. (Creative Connections) - A.Y.T.E.C. stands for Audio/Visual Technical Engagement Crew. A.Y.T.E.C. is the network of students working behind our school TV studio "Creative Connections." This organization is responsible for weekly announcements, Channel One Productions, writing, producing and directing original programming for our campus, studio. Meeting times and days: (TBA).
CHESS CLUB - Chess Club is for those students who wish to develop skill in the art of playing chess. Inter-school matches are held, and, Waukegan High School will compete in the state chess tournament.
COLOR GUARD - This club presents national, state and school flags for the Waukegan community. Meets twice a week at each campus, open to all JROTC members.
CREATIVE WRITING CLUB - This club provides the students an opportunity to sharpen their writing skills.
CROSSED RIFLES - A club open to JROTC cadets, Crossed Rifles stresses community service and adventure training. Members learn survival techniques through classroom and hands-on training. Community , service is performed individually and in small teams. Meetings are held once a week at both NGC in Rm.207 and UGC in Rm. EO32. Meetings held at UGC are in the morning and meetings held in the NGC are in the afternoon.
CROSSED SABERS CLUB - The aim of the Crossed Sabers Club is to promote the Reserve Officers Training Corps and to act as a guiding body for the unit. The Crossed Sabers Club sponsors the annual Military Ball, community parade units, groups for drill exhibitions,and school assembly programs.
DRAMA CLUB - This club is a support organization for all theater activities at WHS. Drama Club meets twice a month. Meetings consist of planning fundraisers, production of school plays, marketing, and promotions of all student theater presentations.
DRILL TEAM - The Drill Team is a club that teaches synchronized formations; competes regionally and is open to all JROTC members.
ECHO CLUB (Environmental Club Helping Others) - This club meets weekly to learn about environmental issues in the community and worldwide. It does volunteer work to help the environment. There are field trips to local parks and sponsorship of recycling programs. This is a club for those who enjoy community service and the out-of-doors.
FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLUB - Meeting times and days TBA.
FRENCH CLUB - Meeting times and days TBA.
GERMAN CLUB - Any current or former German language student who desires an opportunity to use the language and learn more about German history and culture is eligible to join. German Club sponsors monthly activities and participates in school-sponsored events.
LITERARY (THE THIRSTY ELEPHANT) CLUB - All students who are interested in literature are welcome to join. The chief project of the club is writing and publishing the creative arts magazine.
MADRIGAL DINNER - Students enrolled in choir are eligible to audition to be part of the Madrigal Dinner in December. It is a renaissance dinner including music, acting, and dancing. Meeting times and days TBA.
MUSIC ORGANIZATIONS - Meeting times and days TBA.
MARCHING BAND - Meets Monday and Thursday 3:45-5:45 PM and Saturdays for home football games, various parades, and competitions. Meetings are held August through November in Rm.E-lOl at the UGC.
JAZZ BAND - Meets Tuesdays 3:30-5:00 PM August through November, Mondays and Thursdays 3:30-5:00 PM in Rm. E-lOl at the UGC.
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY - The National Honor Society at Waukegan High School is an organization with a highly selective membership created to recognize and honor those students who have shown outstanding qualities of scholarship, leadership, service and character. It is open to all sophomore, junior, and senior students that maintain a weighted G.P.A. of 4.2 and have met minimum requirements in extra-curricular activities, leadership positions, community service, work experiences, and other honors and awards.
PEP BAND - Attend boy's and most girl's home basketball games and sectional games. Meetings are held in Rm. E-1O1 at the UGC.
PRINCIPALS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM - This is an academic incentive program, sponsored by the University of Illinois. PSP targets minority students that are given additional support to prepare for post secondary education.
S.A.P.(Student Assistance Program) - SAP. is designed to assist young people dealing with a myriad of at-risk behavior. Focus on education concerns, rather than attempt to fix global social issues. Improve the climate of schools by focusing on areas where schools have legal and ethical responsibilities. Work with existing human resources, rather than create a new entity within the school. Provide essential linkages to local and state agencies. Staff can help by getting involved. Get training to be on the Core Team and work with referrals, prevention, intervention and aftercare, and also facilitate groups or be a mentor.
SCHOOL NEWSPAPER (DOG TIMES) - This is a classroom staff of students that organize, write, and develop a bimonthly student publication.
SPANISH CLUB - Meeting times and days TBA.
SPEECH CLUB - Students interested in local, regional, and state speech competitions are encouraged to join this organization.
STUDENT COUNCIL - This school organization aims to assist students in conducting their own affairs, to serve as the voice of the student body, to plan various school events (i.e. dances, gym jams, homecoming, etc.), and to share the responsibility with the faculty and the building administration in areas of mutual concern.
THESPIANS - The National Thespian Society is an honorary society for high school students interested in dramatics. The club goals are to uphold standards of excellence and to create interest in the dramatic arts among high school students. Students are granted membership after having performed meritorious work in the dramatic arts. A student is required to discharge specified duties and to meet certain tests and standards.
"W" CLUB - "W" Club is open to all athletes who have earned at least two minor "W"s or one major "W" and who continue to be active in the interscholastic athletic program.
YEARBOOK STAFF - This organization plans, develops, and produces the school's annual yearbook.
